This morning an explosive device detonated at the Social Security Administration building in Casa Grande, AZ. While no injuries were reported and officials said the fire that occurred after the explosion was quickly extinguished, this does seem like the opportune time to provide the following safety tips.
Follow these steps for handling suspicious packages and envelopes
- Leave the package or envelope where it was found. Do not open, shake or empty the contents. If opened, do not allow unqualified or unauthorized individuals to examine the item
- Clear the immediate area of all people and take actions to prevent others from entering the area. Close any doors leading to the area. Direct people to a designated safe area away from the suspicious item to await further instruction. Take names of the people who were in close proximity to the item
- At work, notify your supervisor, office manager or floor warden. If at home, contact the local law enforcement agency
- If possible, and appropriate under the circumstances, try to make contact with the sender of the item
Follow these steps when in out in public
- Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when in large crowds. Take note of where emergency exits and staircases are located, and any fire extinguishers or safety equipment
- When you enter an area, notice any heavy objects that could break in an explosion and plan how you would leave if needed
- Take precautions when traveling: never accept packages from strangers or leave luggage unattended. Any unusual behavior should be reported to the police or security personnel
- Do not be afraid to leave an area if you feel uncomfortable
